Branch Story
It had always been the vision of the Sungum to have branches all over the country and promote Saivism to the masses. Fate and destiny are an integral part of our lives and it was destined that in the new millennium a branch was to be opened in Cape Town.
In the year 2002, Thiru SK Pillay relocated to Cape Town from Durban with his family. Thiru SK Pillay was the president of the Sungum and had to relinquish his position when he moved to Cape Town. Whilst in Cape Town he informed Swami Siva Yogananda, the spiritual head of the Sungum, about his plans to open a branch in Cape Town. Swami gave him his blessings and assisted him by providing names of people who had relocated to Cape Town.
Thiru SK Pillay contacted Asogan Naidoo, who had relocated to Cape Town from Pietermaritzburg. They got a group together and started the Sunday morning service. Initially services were held in the premises of Asogan Naidoo in Hout Bay whilst a more central venue was sought. On Sunday 20 April 2003, the Cape Town branch was officially launched with the first public service in Rylands Primary School in College Road, Rylands. Since its official launch, the branch has hosted the following functions annually:
-
Maha Sivarathri
-
Guru Swamigal’s Maha Samadhi
-
Maha Sakthi Prayer
-
Thiru Karthigai Deepam
The branch also conducts cottage services, ceremonies, funerals, and special prayers for the sick.
In September 2005, Swami Siva Yogananda appointed:
-
Thiru SK Pillay as the Spiritual Leader of the branch,
-
Asogan Naidoo as the Deputy Spiritual Leader, and
-
Kantha Pillay and Savy Perumal as Trainees
Due to his work commitments Asogan Naidoo was not able to undertake his responsibilities and therefore in 2006 Savy Perumal was appointed as Acting Deputy Spiritual Leader.
The branch has subsequently grown from strength to strength and celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2023.
