Branch Story

The Shallcross Branch of the Saiva Sithantha Sungum started in November 1967 by Mrs Tholsie Govender, her late husband, Mr Sunny Govender and Mr Siva Govender at 44 Outeniqua Street, Shallcross.

The main inspiration for the formation of a branch in Shallcross was Mrs Tholsee’s father- in-law who was an official of the Westcliff Branch of the Sungum. They were later joined by Mr Peter Naicker who firmly established the Saiva Sithantha Sungum in the Shallcross area.

During these early years, the branch conducted Tamil and music classes; Tamil classes were conducted by Mrs Tholsee. Mr Muthusamy Naicker donated musical instruments and benches to the branch. We were also involved in cottage services, ceremonies, weddings, cultural events, etc.

From these premises, we moved to Mr Peter Naicker’s residence, then to the Late Bob Moodley’s
residence, then onto Mr Nandha Chetty’s residence, then back to the Late Bob Moodley’s residence,
then onto Mr Pillay’s residence,  the Malvern Primary School and the Sri Siva Soobramonia Temple.  

Services used to be conducted by Swami Somanantha at Mrs Munthree’s house as well.

We have been served by numerous Gurus and Swamis over the years including ;
Swami Karunianantha, Guru Ganas Masitry, Swami Brahmanantha, Swami Santhlinganantha, Guru
Murugan Senior, Guru Krish and more recently, Guru Gan Reddy, Magendran and Guru Thiagarajan.

Currently, Guru P Munthree is the branch Guru and Rogers Rungasamy is the deputy Guru.

We have a small by dynamic branch committee which has continued to take the branch to greater
heights in its quest to realise Guru Swamigal’s vision for mankind.

Our branch is very actively involved in community upliftment projects. We have a daily feeding
scheme at the Malvern Primary School.

 We also support other organisations in their spiritual quests and fundraisers.

Our Branch has come a long way in the over 50 years we have been around and we hope to achieve a lot more in the coming years and beyond.

With the help of our Sat Guru and Lord Siva, we are confident that we will spread love and hope to our community and mankind.
