Saiva Sithantha Sungum - Sezela Branch

VENUE :

GURU : Dolly Govender

My Story

It was through the personal inspiration of the late Swami Santhalingananda, who was then the General Secretary of the Sungum’s headquarters at 37 Derby Street, Durban.

At that period, though he knew no one at Sezela, though the grace of Lord Shiva he came in contact with the late Mr Chittaray Moomsamy at his business place in the Indian Market and discussed Saivism and its significance.

They discussed and decided to open a branch at Sezela with the help of the Sungum’s headquarters. The person who was instrumental and delegated to get the branch off the ground was the late Mr Mk. K. Naidoo (Stanley).

A committee was formed to maintain the smooth functioning of the branch. The following persons
were elected to office at the meeting :-
The Late Mr Chinna Naidoo (Chairman), Mr S. Bridgelall (secretary), and Mr M.K. Naidoo
(Treasurer).

The committee members were late Mr V. Jack Rama, late Mr T. Paul, late Mr Iyman D. Govnder, late Mr P.K. Phillip, late Mr V. Padavatan, late Mr Kesava Odayar and late Mr. C.G. Moodley. In the latter stages the late Mr Maistry, late Mr Paris and Mr C.D. Bobby.

On Sunday 28th June 1959, Sri Karunayananda Swamigal officially opened the Sezela Branch in the Temple Hall. His talk on the significance of Saivism inspired and touched many hearts. He thereafter officially declared the Saiva Sithantha Sungum – Sezela branch open.

He wished the branch all the best and to continue with the good work that has been started.

In the beginning, Mr Arnajellum from headquarters came up to conduct Sunday services, since all members were well versed in the teachings, the late Mr Iyman D. Govender was chose as the branch guru and leader. Due to retirement he left Sezela and settled in Cliffdale, thereafter Mr Jimmy Kirsten was initiated as the guru. When he passed on there wasn’t a guru.

In 1977 Sister Dolly Govender continued her service by conducting the Sunday and prayer services.
In 1980, Mr Vella Govindsamy was initiated as the branch guru by Swami Bramanandha. The current Guru is Guru Dolly Govender.

Apart from Sunday services the branch is very active in conducting prayer services on the South
Coast.

Regular music classes are held on Monday afternoons and thanks to all our mothers that attend the
music classes because it has improved the singing and made it possible to learn new songs.
